5 May - The Royal College of Physicians of London has issued the following update to those affected by the recruitment error. We will continue to provide updates as matters progress.

ST3 recruitment - Message from the President and Trainees' Committee

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh was made aware yesterday evening that all ST3 recruitment offers in the medical specialties have been recalled. As yet we are not aware of all the facts but believe this to be due to a significant error in the recruitment office of the Royal College of Physicians of London (RCPL) who undertake this process on behalf of the four nations' training bodies, including HEE, NHS Education Scotland, the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency, and the Wales Deanery. We are informed that this will require the re-running of the offers process and it is expected that new job offers will begin to be  issued on 10 May.

We were incredibly disappointed to hear of the error and are investigating this with the London College to fully understand what has caused this issue and ensure that it is resolved with the utmost importance and priority. We are expecting updates of progress over the weekend and their statement on the error is available here.

We are fully aware of the distress and worry that this will cause to all those affected. The uncertainty that it causes for those who have accepted jobs and made important decisions around these job offers is a concern that we absolutely recognise. Importantly, the impact that this will have on the morale of a significant section of our workforce, who are already going above and beyond on a daily basis in challenging working conditions, is fully acknowledged. We offer our full support and assistance where we can and would encourage you to contact us directly at trainees@rcpe.ac.uk

Individual queries should be addressed to the London College’s recruitment office at st3recruitment@rcplondon.ac.uk as we do not have access to specific information. We will update this message if we receive further updates from RCPL.

Professor Derek Bell OBE, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh

Dr Anna Olsson-Brown and Dr Marcus Lyall, Co-Chairs of the Trainees and Members' Committee

Message from the Director of Training

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and our Trainee and Members’ Committee remain absolutely committed to supporting and representing trainees in this process and we are keen to provide support and assistance where we can and to raise concerns directly with the Royal College of Physicians of London.

I was deeply concerned to hear of the error that has occurred in the recruitment office of the Royal College of Physicians of London (RCPL) in the ST3 recruitment process and the high level of distress and concern this is causing for those affected.

Since learning of the error, the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh has been working with the RCPL to fully understand the cause and extent of the problem and ensure that we can provide updates as and when we receive them. The RCPL’s latest communications is available here.

We now know that around 1,500 candidates are affected and the RCPL is preparing to rerun the ST3 offer process. They are responding directly to individual queries and will provide a further updated FAQ on Tuesday. It is expected that job offers will be issued on 14 May.

We will also be calling on the RCPL to review the recruitment process so that such a situation cannot occur again.

In the meantime, please get in touch at trainees@rcpe.ac.uk if we can assist in anyway.
