Egypt

Professor Samir Naim Assaad is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Endocrinology, having served as the chief of the Division of Endocrinology (2011-2014) and the head of the Department of Internal Medicine (2013-2014) at the University of Alexandria. He obtained his medical degree from the Alexandria Medical School in 1977 and completed fellowships in endocrinology at the MD Anderson Hospital in Houston, Texas, and Western General Hospital in Edinburgh. 

He is member of the PACES committee in Cairo.

Kenya

Professor George Oyoo is an Associate Professor in the Department of Clinical Medicine and Therapeutics at the University of Nairobi and Head of the Rheumatology Unit at the Kenyatta National Hospital, Nairobi. He is Chairman of the Arthrheuma Society of Kenya, Chairman of the Association for Arthritis and Rheumatic Diseases of Kenya, and the founder and Chairman of the Uwezo Rheumatology Foundation.

Prof Oyoo is the former president of the African League of Associations for Rheumatology, past chairman and member of the executive committee of the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR). He was the WHO Bone and Joint Decade National Action Network Coordinator for Kenya. He is also a Fellow of the American college of Rheumatology, a Fellow of the East and Central Africa College of Physicians, and a member of the British Society for Rheumatology.

Professor Mashiko Setshedi

South Africa

Professor Mashiko Setshedi is the St Anne’s Chair and Head of Medical Gastroenterology at Groote Shuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town. Between 2009 and 2011 she was at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, conducting laboratory research towards her PhD. In 2015 she was awarded the Oxford Nuffield Medical Scholarship where she spent 2.5 years at Oxford University on a post-doctoral fellowship.

Professor Setshedi has peer-reviewed publications, supervises postgraduate students, examines and convenes for the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa and serves as an external examiner at national universities. She is a member of several committees within the Faculty of Health Sciences and university, and has recipient of a number of awards.

Dr Allam

Dr Dalia Allam

Sudan

Dr Dalia Allam is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Salisbury District Hospital, UK. She obtained her MBBS from the University of Khartoum in 2007, MRCP UK in 2012, a Clinical MD in Internal Medicine in 2016, a Gastroenterology Fellowship from the Sudan Medical Specialization Board in 2019, FRCP Edin in 2020, and an MRCP Specialty Certificate in Gastroenterology in 2023. 

Dr Allam leads inpatient and outpatient gastroenterology services, performs advanced diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, and manages complex liver and GI disorders. Previously, she was Senior Clinical Fellow at Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust and Consultant at the Ibn Sina Centre for Gastroenterology & Liver Disease in Sudan, where she established HBV screening and vaccination services and founded a dedicated research office. She has published in The Lancet Gastroenterology & Hepatology and the Journal of Hepatology, presented at international conferences, and is a member of BSG, BASL, EASL, and ILTS.

Professor Victor Lasebikan

Professor Victor Lasebikan is a Professor of Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine at the University of Ibadan. He obtained BSc Health Sciences and MBChB from the University of Ife (Nigeria), MS and MSc in Addiction Medicine from the Virginia Commonwealth, Richmond, United States, Institute of Psychiatry, Kings College London, and University of Adelaide Australia, MPH and PhD (Public Health/Community Medicine) at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria and MD (Psychiatry) from the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria. He also holds Psychosomatic Specialist Certificate of the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine.

Professor Lasebikan is a leading African member of the International Society of Addiction Medicine (ISAM), International Society of Biological Research on Alcohol (ISBRA) and Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. He has over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and is a reviewer of several journals such as the BMC journals, PLOS Medicine, American Journal of Public Health. He is also a review editor of Frontiers journals. 

Dr Mateyo

Dr Kondwelani Mateyo

Zambia

Dr Kondwelani Mateyo is a consultant respiratory physician at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka, where he leads the Respiratory Medicine Unit and serves as the Medical Lead of the Intensive Care Unit. He also holds an honorary lecturer position at the University of Zambia. 

Dr Mateyo obtained his MBChB from the University of Zambia and completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the University Teaching Hospital. He pursued a fellowship in Respiratory Medicine at St Antonius Ziekenhuis, Nieuwegein. Afterwards, he returned to Zambia to establish the country’s first specialist respiratory service, with the aim of improving respiratory clinical care, research, and teaching. He is currently a PhD student at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His research interests are primarily in pulmonary infections, with a particular focus on novel tuberculosis diagnostics and therapeutics. He is also a Fellow of the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Physicians, where he is a trainer and examiner.

Dr Khoo

Dr Tien Kheng Khoo

Australia - Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales & Queensland

Dr Tien Kheng Khoo graduated from Newcastle University in England where he obtained his MBBS and PhD qualifications. He migrated to Australia in 2012 and remains active in clinical and academic positions. He works full-time as a consultant physician and is Head of Medicine at Ballina District Hospital, New South Wales. His academic appointments include Senior Lecturer in Medical Education at Griffith University, Queensland, and Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Wollongong, New South Wales. Via these appointments, he teaches graduate medical school programmes and supervises higher degree research candidates.

Dr Khoo has a special interest in movement disorders, in-particular Parkinson’s disease. His other research interests include polypharmacy and frailty. As a regional adviser, Dr Khoo is happy to be contacted if he can assist as a representative of the college and looks forward to hearing from local fellows, members and affiliates in Australia.

Dr Mya Mya Yee

Australia - Northern Territory & Western Australia

Dr Mya Mya Yee is a graduate from the University of Medicine (1), Yangon. She received her MRCP(UK) in 2000 followed by Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 2007. She also achieved her Doctorate degree in Hepatology in 2007. She was the Head of Department of Hepatology and Consultant Physician in Internal Medicine in Myanmar until she migrated to Australia in 2011.

Dr Yee received her FRACP (Australia) in 2013 and is currently the Senior Consultant Physician of both the Acute Medical Unit and the Internal Medicine Unit of Royal Perth Hospital which is an acute tertiary hospital of Western Australia. She also has a special interest in hepatology and perioperative medicine. She is also interested in teaching, training and supervision. She is an adjunct senior clinical lecturer of University of Western Australia (UWA) and actively participates in physician training.

Dr Richard Baker

Australia - South Australia, Tasmania & Victoria

Dr Richard Baker obtained his MBBS from Monash University. After a year as house officer in Yorkshire, including at the Leeds General Infirmary, he worked as an SHO at the old Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, the Spinal Unit at Stoke Mandeville, and at several hospitals in London before obtaining his MRCP(UK). He completed his physician training in Melbourne at the Austin Hospital, Monash Medical Centre, and as the senior medical registrar at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Additionally, he qualified as a psychiatrist. He worked as a consultant physician in general medicine and in psychiatry for many years at Box Hill Hospital, and is now in private practice.

Dr John Edmond

New Zealand

Dr John Edmond is an interventional cardiologist in Dunedin Hospital, New Zealand and Senior Clinical Lecturer at the University of Otago. Born and bred in Edinburgh, he studied medicine at Bristol University and subsequently went through the South West cardiology training scheme, undertaking an MD (thesis subject of STEMI management) at Greenlane Hospital, Auckland. He returned to the UK in 2003, but eventually relocated to Dunedin in 2014.

John’s interests include education, and in particular the use of simulation for medical education, and quality improvement. Outside the hospital his interests are cycling and skiing, and in particular welcomes any questions from Fellows about the ski fields of New Zealand.

Prof Quazi Tarikul Islam

Professor Quazi Tarikul Islam is Professor and Head of the Department of Medicine, Popular Medical College, Dhaka. He is an Examiner for undergraduate and postgraduate examinations. He previously served as Consultant, Assistant Professor, Associate Professor and Professor of Medicine in different medical colleges. He worked as the editor-in-chief of different journals in Bangladesh and also reviewer of a number of international journals.

Professor Islam graduated in 1981. He qualified his FCPS (Fellowship) in Internal Medicine in July 1987. He received Fellowship from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 2008, and Master of the American College of Physicians in 2018. He was the Councillor, Treasurer and former Controller of examination of Bangladesh College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is the past president of the Bangladesh Society of Medicine, and Founder Governor of American College of Physicians (ACP) Bangladesh Chapter. He was the Executive Member of International Society of Internal Medicine (ISIM) 2018-2020.

Professor Ivan Fan Ngai Hung is Chair Professor of Infectious Diseases, Ru Chien and Helen Lieh Endowed Professor in Health Sciences Pedagogy, Associate Dean (Partnership & Engagement), Head of the Division of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, School of Clinical Medicine, The University of Hong Kong, and Honorary Consultant in Queen Mary Hospital, Hong Kong. He is a dual specialist in Infectious Disease and Gastroenterology & Hepatology. He graduated from the University of Bristol Medical School in 1996. After working in the University of Cambridge Medical School and Charing Cross Hospital, London, he returned to Hong Kong in 1999 and joined the Queen Mary Hospital. He was awarded the Anti-SARS gold badge by the Hospital Authority in 2003, the Sir Patrick Manson Gold Medal award for best M.D. thesis, the Richard Yu Lectureship and medal in 2016 by the Hong Kong College of Physicians and the Outstanding Researcher Award from the University of Hong Kong in 2019.

Hong Kong

Dr Emmy Lau is Chief of Service and Consultant, Department of Medicine, Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital. Since 2008, she has been an Honorary Clinical Professor at The University of Hong Kong. Her administrative experience includes various leadership roles within the Hospital Authority. She was Head of the Endocrine and Diabetes team for 16 years till 2023 and held the role of Deputy Hospital Chief Executive from 2021 to 2024. She was Assistant Program Director for the AIM Board of HK East Cluster from 2015 to 2021. 

Dr Lau actively participates as an examiner for AIM and PACES examinations and has served on the Education and Accreditation Committee for the Endocrine Subspecialty Board, the Credentialing Committee, and a Council Member of the Hong Kong Society of Endocrinology, Metabolism, and Reproduction (HKSEMR). Since 2018, she has also been a co-editor for the editorial board of “Synapse,” a publication of the College.

Dr Sivasankaran

Dr Ajith Sivasankaran

India - Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala & Telangana

Dr Ajith Kumar Sivasankaran is the Chief Consultant at the Department of Hyperbaric Medicine and Diabetic Foot Care, SP Fort Hospital, Trivandrum and serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine at SUT Academy of Medical Sciences, Trivandrum. 

In 2014, he then went on to start the first hyperbaric oxygen therapy centre in Kerala at SP Fort hospital, focussing mainly on the treatment of non-healing foot ulcers. He is one of the two DGCA licenced Class 1 and 2 medical examiners for commercial pilot licence aspirants in Kerala. He is the founder of Kairali Diabetes Research and Care, an organisation focused on academic and research activities related with diabetes and also providing diabetes care and education to public. 

He is an examiner for the MRCP PACES examination. He is an office bearer for various professional organisations like IMA (Branch Vice-President, state convener for various committees), RSSDI (joint secretary, Kerala), Indian Society of Aerospace Medicine (Executive committee member) and Physician club of Trivandrum (secretary) and is an active member of ADA.

Dr Bandopadhyay

Dr Syamasis Bandyopadhyay

India - East and North East India

Dr Syamasis Bandyopadhyay is a Senior Consultant Physician and Rheumatologist at Apollo Multispeciality Hospitals, Kolkata. After studying for his MBBS at Medical College, Calcutta, he graduated MD Medicine from Gandhi Medical College, Bhopal. Subsequently, he undertook MRCP (UK) and worked at various places in the UK, including as a Specialist Registrar in South Wales, mainly University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff, and then moved to Bristol Royal Infirmary as Consultant Physician and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer at Bristol University Medical School.

Dr Bandyopadhyay worked as a Royal College Tutor and Post Graduate Medical Tutor at BRI. Currently he is an MRCP PACES Overseas Examiner and a National Board New Delhi Tutor and Examiner as well.

Dr Jugal Kishor Sharma is Medical Director and Senior Consultant at Central Delhi Diabetes Centre. He is Founder and Secretary General of the Innovative Physicians Forum and Founder Member (Promoter) of the Vaccine Advocacy Forum. He is former Vice President of both the Geriatric Society of India (2014 - 2019) and the Karol Bagh branch of the Indian Medical Association (2018 - 2020) and was the Honorary Secretary of the RSSDI Delhi Chapter (2017 - 2020).

He received a letter of recognition from the RCPE for Outstanding Contribution to the Work of the Fellowship Committee (2018) and was nominated among our Top Ten Inspiring Physicians for 2019. He is the recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award for Distinguished Services in the field of Diabetes and Medicine presented by the Research Society for the Study of Diabetes in India’s Rajasthan Chapter (2018).

Prof Molly Thabah

India - Tamil Nadu

Professor Molly Thabah is Professor and Head of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, India.

Professor Thabah has been on the faculty of JIPMER since 2011, where she oversees a team of 30 staff members, including technical, and support staff. Additionally she is involved in teaching MD Medicine, and DM Clinical Immunology students, fostering the next generation of medical professionals. Her team manages a busy clinical schedule, seeing approximately 1,000 to 1,200 rheumatology patients per week in the outpatient settings.

Currently, Professor Thabah also serves as Education Editor of the Journal of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (JRCPE). She has served as an Associate Editor of the Indian Journal of Rheumatology from 2013 to 2022 and has also been one of the editors for the Manual of Rheumatology for its 5th and 6th editions.

Dr Sandeep Tamane has 22 years of experience as a Consultant Physician and Geriatrician. He works at Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital and Research Centre and Symbiosis University Hospital and Research Center, Pune. Prior to this, he worked in the UK and obtained MRCP(UK). He was instrumental in starting the International Center for MRCP PACES at Pune where he is Federation Lead. He regularly examines for MRCP PACES at many other centres in India and is a MRCP(UK) Theory Question Writer. He has a keen interest in Geriatric Medicine and is a Fellow of the Geriatric Society of India. Currently, he is Chairman of the Pune Chapter of Geriatric Society of India and Executive Committee Member of Geriatric Society of India National Body. He is working as an Assistant Professor in Medicine at a Dental School in Pune. He is regular faculty for various national conferences and often organises conferences in Pune.

Professor Hasan Ali Farhan is Senior Consultant Cardiologist, Medical Education Specialist, and President of Iraqi Scientific Council of Cardiology. His positions include: founder and Head of the training program of an Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Devices Fellowship; founder and Chairman of a Cardiac Imaging Training Program Fellowship; founder and Director of the first Cardio-Maternal Clinic in Iraq and the National Program of Heart Disease in Pregnancy; faculty and member of advisory board of International Congress of Cardiac Problems in Pregnancy; Committee Member of Heart Failure Association/European Society of Cardiology Peripartum Cardiomyopathy (PPCM) Committee; National Principal Investigator of the international EurObservational Research Programme (EORP); member of the Steering Committee of acute coronary syndrome STEMI Registry; founder of First Cardio-Oncology Clinic in Iraq; and President of the Iraq Chapter of the International Cardio-Oncology Society [ICOS].

Dr Aso Sheikh Bzeni

Dr Aso Sabir Saeed Sheikh Bzeni is an Assistant Professor and Senior Consultant Neurologist at Rizgary Teaching Hospital, Erbil, and Program Director of Neurology in the Kurdistan Council for Medical Specialties. He completed his MBChB at Mosul Medical School in June 1992. In June 2013 he became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. He has a special interest in multiple sclerosis.

Dr Mudher Al-Khairalla qualified in 2001 from Dundee University. He completed his training in Scotland to become a consultant in Respiratory medicine in 2009. He spent four years establishing and advancing respiratory services in Iraq. He continues to be an active examiner on the MRCP PACES exams circuit. He has successfully nominated colleagues in Iraq who have gone on to successfully attain Fellowship. He has engaged in teleconference meetings with the President of the College and senior office bearers to promote and plan potential college involvement in utilising the MTI programme, setting up local written MRCP and hopefully in the future, PACES exams in Iraq. He is currently in active clinical practice and regularly engages in undergraduate and postgraduate training. He continues to participate in organising CPD events in Iraq.

Jordan

Professor Mohammad Ali Ghnaimat is a Consultant Nephrologist, an Associate Professor at Mo'tah University and the Secretary General of the Arab Society of Nephrology and Renal Transplant. He received his certification in internal medicine in Jordan in 1991, then he completed his Diploma in Nephrology, Hypertension and Renal Transplant at University of London in 1994 and trained in Nephrology and Transplantation at Hammersmith Hospital in London between 1994 and 1995. He received his certification in nephrology in Jordan in 1996 and undertook specialty training in Immunology of Kidney Transplantation at Harvard University, Boston from 2002 to 2003.

Professor Ghnaimat is President of the Jordan Society of Nephrology and Renal Transplantation, the Jordan Society of Internal Medicine, and the Jordan Society of British Medical Graduates. He is also President Elect of the Middle East Society of Organ Transplantation (MESOT). He has participated in around 150 medical conferences and meetings, presented over 70 scientific papers, and published 27 papers.

Dr Varkey Alexander is Consultant in Internal Medicine, Head of Medical Unit at Al-Sabah Hospital, Ministry of Health, Kuwait, and Clinical Tutor, Faculty of Medicine, Kuwait University. After completing his BSc, he obtained MBBS and MD (Gen. Medicine) from Medical College, Trivandrum, University of Kerala. He had training in respiratory medicine from the Chest Institute, Trivandrum, and obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the School of Tropical Medicine, Calcutta.

He served the state health service of Kerala before he moved to Kuwait. His prime interest is in clinical medicine and his passion is in teaching medical students, trainees and PACES candidates.

Prof G R Letchuman Ramanathan

Malaysia

Professor G R Letchuman Ramanathan is the Professor of Medicine in the Clinical School Johor Bahru, Monash University Malaysia since May 2021. He is President of the College of Physicians, constituent college of the Academy of Medicine of Malaysia. He has been involved in many studies both local and international, mainly in diabetes related areas, as well as in endemic goiter prevalence studies and in health system research especially on patient safety.

Professor Letchuman Ramanathan was previously the Senior Consultant Physician and Endocrinologist in the Department of Medicine, Hospital Ipoh, Perak. He was the National Head of the Ministry of Health Internal Medicine Services. He was the President of ASAP (Autism Support Association for Parents) until 2020.

Prof Aye Aye Chit

Myanmar

Professor Aye Aye Chit is the Head of the Department of Medicine at the University of Medicine, Mandalay. A graduate of the same institution in 1988, she holds a Master’s degree in Internal Medicine, a Doctorate in General Medicine, and a Diploma in Medical Education.

As the current President of the Myanmar Internal Medicine Society (2024–2026), Professor Chit chairs the undergraduate and postgraduate medical training boards and is a member of the Academic and Research Ethics Committees. With 35 years of experience in teaching, clinical care, and research, her expertise focuses on Endocrinology and Diabetes. The Myanmar Internal Medicine Society emphasizes collaboration to enhance internal medicine practice across the globe. 

Dr Karki

Nepal

Professor Lochan Karki is the Rector and Professor of Internal Medicine at the National Academy of Medical Sciences (NAMS), Bir Hospital, where he oversees academic programs and postgraduate training, mentoring young doctors and guiding research projects. Beyond his academic role, he is an advocate for healthcare reform, having served as the Immediate Past President of the Nepal Medical Association. In this capacity, he spearheaded initiatives to improve health policies, enhance working conditions for medical professionals, and expand access to quality care across Nepal.

Professor Karki has led disaster relief efforts, organised free health camps in underserved regions, and championed innovative approaches such as telemedicine to reach remote populations. He has received awards including the Saprabal Janasewa Shree Award and has represented Nepal in global medical forums. He has a deep passion for fostering collaboration and education.

Prof Issa Al Salmi

Professor Issa Al Salmi is a Senior Consultant and the Head of Renal Services in Oman. He works at the Royal Hospital and Ministry of Health in Oman. He has over twenty years of experience in education across various countries. He regularly provides education for undergraduates and postgraduates, both locally and internationally. 

Professor Al Salmi has a passion for medical education. As part of his roles at the Oman Medical Specialty Board (OMSB), the University (SQU), and Oman Medical College (National University), he provide curriculum, assessment, and examination, and manages the quality of curricula for undergraduate and postgraduate Candidates. He is also responsible for Nephrology and Internal Medicine academic conferences, and continuous Professional Development accredited programs through OMSB.

Prof Muhammad Tariq

Pakistan - Karachi, Sind and Baluchistan

Professor Muhammad Tariq has worked as Vice Dean, Medical College, Aga Khan University, Karachi, since August 2022. He has been Professor of Medicine since 2017, served as Interim Associate Dean, Education, and Chair, Department for Educational Development, from 2015 to July 2022. He served as Section Head, Internal Medicine from 2011-2017, Director of Postgraduate Programmes Medicine from 2008-2015 and Programme Director of Internal Medicine from 2001-2011, supervising both FCPS and MRCP candidates.

Professor Tariq graduated from Dow Medical College. He obtained FAIMER Institute Fellowship from Philadelphia in 2011 and MHPE from Maastricht University Netherlands in 2014. He became Supervisor and Examiner for FCPS (Fellowship of the College of Physicians & Surgeons, Pakistan) in 2005 and 2012 respectively. He is a supervisor and examiner of MHPE students. Professor Tariq has also been Global Faculty Project Advisor for FAIMER since 2017. He became a Fellow of the Pakistan Society of Internal Medicine in July 2021.

Dr Afsha Khan is a Consultant Rheumatologist at Rehman Medical Institute, Peshawar. She graduated from Khyber Medical College, Peshawar in 2003 and following a year of house job, she continued postgraduate training in the UK. She passed MRCP in 2009 and obtained CCT in Rheumatology in 2019. She then worked as a Consultant Rheumatologist at Queens Medical Centre, Nottingham till July 2022.

In October 2022, Dr Khan commenced her job as Consultant Rheumatologist at Rehman Medical Institute, where she established a Rheumatology service. She practices general Rheumatology and her area of subspecialist interest is inflammatory arthritis. Her vision is to improve care and treatment in the Northern areas of Pakistan to free the region of disease related deformities, which is still evident in this region. She is a member of the Rheumatology SCE Question Writing Group.

Dr Muhammed Aasim Yusuf graduated from the King Edward Medical College, Lahore, and went to the UK for postgraduate training thereafter. Dr Brian T Garibaldi

USA - Midwestern States

Dr Brian T Garibaldi is the Charles Horace Mayo Professor of Medicine in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care at the Northwestern Feinberg School of Medicine. He is the director of the Northwestern Center for Bedside Medicine, whose mission is to redesign the modern clinical encounter to meet the needs of patients and healthcare professionals. 

In 2017 Dr Garibaldi co-founded and became the first co-president of the Society of Bedside Medicine, an organization devoted to education, innovation and research on the role of the clinical encounter in 21st century medicine. He was formerly the associate program director for bedside medicine at the Johns Hopkins Osler Medical Residency Program. He also directed the Johns Hopkins Special Pathogens Center, a federally funded special pathogens treatment program. When the President of the United States became ill with COVID-19 in 2020, Dr Garibaldi served as a member of his care team.
