College’s immediate past President, Professor Andrew Elder, awarded OBE in King’s Birthday Honours
Professor Andrew Elder, the College’s immediate past President, has been awarded an OBE in the King’s Birthday Honours. Professor Elder received the award for services to medicine and medical education. He was a consultant in acute medicine of the elderly for many years and was the first geriatrician to become President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. In addition, he previously served as Medical Director of MRCP(UK), Chair of the MRCP (UK) Clinical Examining Board and Chair of the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges Assessment Committee.
Commenting today Professor Mark Strachan, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:
On behalf of the College I warmly congratulate Professor Elder on this award which is richly deserved and I know this news will delight our Fellows and Members.
Professor Elder was an outstanding President of this College and served with great distinction in a long career within geriatric medicine. He has also always been deeply committed to, and passionate about, the quality of medical education and has made a major contribution in this area, especially in relation to medical exams and assessing core bedside skills; it is entirely right that his service to medical education has also been recognised.
Professor Andrew Elder OBE said:
I am humbled to be honoured in this way. My contributions to medicine and medical education are all the product of teamwork and I thank all my colleagues who work so hard to care for our patients and to teach and train future generations of doctors around the world.
