England & Wales

Dr Praveen Ande
Dr Ande is a consultant nephrologist with a special interest in teaching and training. He is Honorary Senior Lecturer at University of East Anglia. In addition, he has an interest and roles in genomics and quality improvement.
This Region comprises Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire, Essex, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, and Suffolk.

Dr Mlawa is a consultant physician in Diabetes and Endocrinology/General Internal Medicine at Queen's Hospital, Romford, East London.

Professor Aravind Ponnuswamy
Professor Ponnuswamy is a consultant physician in respiratory and acute medicine at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Countess of Chester Hospitals.
He became a consultant in 2010, and is a keen educator involved in undergraduate, graduate, and postgraduate training and allied health education. His educator roles, include Training Program Director for Internal Medicine since 2018 for the Mersey region, and clinical teacher at the University of Liverpool School of Medicine. Currently, he is the Respiratory System And Specialty Lead at the University of Liverpool and the Regional Specialty Advisor for Internal Medicine Health Education England Mersey region and has been conferred an Honorary Professorship at Chester Medical School, University of Chester.
He is a member of the British Thoracic Society Tobacco Advisory Group and a member of the BTS Quality Improvement Committee. He has been SIG member of the AMEE and is currently a member of the UEMS boards of specialities for Internal Medicine in Europe. He has organised internal medicine teaching and hands-on courses, and has coordinated, hosted, and chaired PACES exams both nationally and internationally.

Dr Moulinath Banerjee

Dr Eleanor Grogan
Dr Grogan is a consultant at the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer in Palliative Medicine. She trained in London and moved to the North East for registrar training, where she has been working as a consultant since 2007 with a particular interest in community palliative care. She has a strong interest in education, training and assessment and is a senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy. She has been training programme director for palliative medicine, currently holding a lead role for undergraduate medical education at the Trust where she works, has organised national palliative medicine conferences and is a PACES examiner.
This Region is made up of Cleveland, Cumbria (excluding southern Cumbria, i.e. areas with the 'LA' postcode), Durham, Northumberland, and Tyne & Wear.

Dr Soon Hoo Song
Dr Song was appointed Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust in 2004. He is the clinical lead for antenatal diabetes, and has also created a service to improve care of young people with Type 2 diabetes. He was appointed as Diabetes UK Clinical Champion in 2019. He is also an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer.
Apart from clinical roles, Dr Song has been involved in postgraduate education as RCP Tutor, Medical Secretary of SCE Diabetes and Endocrinology Exam Board, member of MRCP Part 1 Exam Board, Question Writing Group for MRCP and PACES Examiner. His research interest focuses on young Type 2 diabetes and he has published articles on complications and cardiovascular risk in this group. Based on his expertise in this field, he has written invited commentaries for Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology and Lancet Child and Adolescent Health. He is a member of the NICE Diabetes Update Committee as an expert diabetes advisor.

Dr Sohail Q Khan
Dr Khan is a consultant interventional cardiologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. He graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh. He published widely as a medical student and spent time at Harvard Medical School, the Mayo Clinic and Groote Schuur Hospital, South Africa. His Cardiology training took place in Leicester, where he earned an MD from the University of Leicester for research on cardiac biomarkers and acute myocardial infarction. Dr Khan then advanced his cardiology training in Manchester before being honoured with the prestigious Boston Scientific Fellowship for advanced coronary intervention training at the University of Toronto/Toronto General Hospital, Canada.
Actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate training, Dr Khan holds an Honorary Senior Lecturer position at the University of Birmingham where he is lead for undergraduate cardiology teaching. He has mentored numerous cardiologists who are now practicing across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
Operating a substantial clinical practice, Dr Khan specializes in all areas of general and interventional cardiology, with a focus on treating high-risk coronary angioplasty patients. His expertise includes the use of rotablation and intracoronary imaging (IVUS, OCT) to optimize stent implantation for optimal patient outcomes. Additionally, he is adept at managing chronic total occlusion and is one of the few UK cardiologists performing laser atherectomy. He runs the UK Impella High Risk PCI course. Dr Khan is widely published in high impact journals including Nature and Circulation and serves as a local Principal Investigator for more than six National and International multi-centre clinical trials.

Dr Joanna Moore
Dr Moore has a strong interest in training and education. As well as a Regional Advisor, she is a tutor for the College, Training Lead and a member of the Academy of Medical Educators.

Professor Atul Kalhan
Professor Kalhan is a consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at Royal Glamorgan Hospital, Llantrisant, Wales and an Honorary Consultant Endocrinologist at the University Hospital of Wales, Cardiff. In April 2018, he was conferred a visiting professorship by the University of South Wales (USW).
Over the last decade, he has been a course director for the endocrinology postgraduate diploma and MSc courses run by USW. He has also been running a Specialty Certificate Examination (SCE) endocrinology course.

Dr Duncan Scott
Dr Scott is a consultant physician in Acute Medicine at Raigmore Hospital, Inverness and Caithness General Hospital, Wick. He is also Divisional Clinical Director for Medicine, NHS Highland.
He trained in northern Scotland and Tasmania, Australia in acute medicine with an interest in rural healthcare. He has particular interests in medical HDU, ambulatory care and acute medical care across the Highlands of Scotland.
He is the divisional clinical director for medicine across NHS Highland, working to unify services and promote excellent medical care in Highland Scotland. He is also passionate about developing educational opportunities within the Highlands, from promoting experience for school leavers in health care to those in senior medical positions.
This Region is comprised of the Hebrides, Highlands, Orkney and Shetland.

Dr Mahendran Chetty
Dr Chetty is a consultant respiratory physician based in Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and an Honorary Lecturer at the Institute of Medical Sciences, University of Aberdeen. His areas of interest are pleural diseases including pleural interventions, lung cancer, bronchoscopic procedures including EBUS. He is a keen educator and involved in examining and hosting PACES.

Dr Ganesan Arunagirinathan
Dr Arunagirinathan was born in Chennai, India. After completing his undergraduate and postgraduate training (MD Gen Med) and working for some years in India he came to the UK. Since 2014, he has been a consultant in diabetes & endocrinology at the Western General Hospital, Edinburgh. He has a special interest in teaching and training and is a PACES examiner.
