Empowering medical excellence, shaping healthcare futures.
A career to be championed, celebrated and embraced.
This SAS Week we’re sharing four personal journeys from SAS doctors who have shaped rewarding, flexible and leadership-focused careers across the UK. Read how they navigated non-standard routes, balanced family and training, pursued research and education, and found professional fulfilment outside the conventional consultant pathway.
After pausing traditional training for family and health, Libby designed a sustainable acute medicine role that grew into a senior SAS post. Now Head of Same Day Emergency Care, she combines autonomous clinical practice with education, simulation and local leadership — and champions SAS by choice.
Ellen’s path blends clinical work, medical education and academic research. After stepping back from full-time training she retrained her career around teaching and a PhD, and now balances geriatric clinical sessions with academic leadership and student support. Her story shows how SAS roles can create a sustainable, varied career.
An International Medical Graduate who moved to the UK in 1999, Ratna used SAS posts and locum consultant work to close training gaps and successfully obtain CESR. She now works as a consultant in respiratory medicine and reflects on the flexibility, research and leadership opportunities SAS roles can provide.
Carlos trained in Spain and built a career across primary care, family planning and genitourinary medicine. A long-time leader in BASHH and local services, he combines clinical practice with service development, education and regional leadership in sexual and reproductive healthcare.
