NHS: How MTI Can Help Fill Your Vacancies
It is with regret that we are unable to accept any new applications for MTI. The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh has been informed that the funding from NHSE for the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges to administer visa sponsorship, has ceased from 31 March 2026, which means that we are unable to accept any new applications for MTI places. Potential developments for any replacement programme will be announced here when new information is available. Please note this does not affect any doctors currently working in MTI placements, whose employment will continue as normal.
For further information regarding the decision to discontinue funding for the GAE/Tier 5 visa sponsorship associated with the MTI scheme, please visit the Academy of Medical Royal Colleges website.
“The MTI process has been consistently excellent and delivered high calibre fellows… [the] trainee was professional, knowledgeable and a pleasure to have in the department.”

What is the process?
Health Boards and Trusts can use the MTI scheme to fill posts for up to two years with fully qualified doctors. Candidates will hold MRCP(UK) or an equivalent advanced postgraduate qualification and must meet the GMC’s requirements for English language proficiency and clinical experience.
We arrange the online interview and, following a successful outcome, the College sponsors the GMC registration and facilitates the visa application. Throughout this process, we work closely with the Board or Trust and the IMGs to ensure everything progresses smoothly.
MTI trainees must have both an educational supervisor and a clinical supervisor who will oversee their progress and support their development. They should have access to training and learning opportunities comparable to other trainees at a similar stage.
