Term of Office
The term of office for the post of Deputy Dean of Education (Digital) is three years, with the option of a second term subject to agreement by Council.
Job Purpose
The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) is committed to delivering lifelong learning for a sustainable health system. It aims to provide Fellows, Members and the wider healthcare community with exceptional educational experiences suitable for every stage of their careers.
In this role, you will support the Dean of Education in driving growth and leveraging emerging trends to position the College as an exemplar in medical education.
A strong interest in digital education and learning technology, and an understanding of how these can transform and personalise the learning experience, is essential.
As a globally focused organisation, with over 40% of its membership located outside the UK, including in digitally developing regions, there is an increasing need to connect and engage this global RCPE community. A significant aspect of this role will be the continued development of RCPE's digital education offering as a world-class learning and development resource.
A key focus will be supporting the growth and development of RCPE Advance (advance.rcpe.ac.uk), a CPD-approved e-learning platform where both Members and non-members can purchase digital education and complete it at their own pace.
The successful candidate will also play a key role in developing and managing partnerships with innovative universities and industry organisations, helping to bring new online medical education products and postgraduate qualifications to market.
The Deputy Dean of Education (Digital) is supported by the Digital Education Manager and team, and will work closely with Office Bearers, the Digital Education Committee and Senior Management colleagues to deliver a sector-leading digital educational offering.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
- Drive innovation across the College's digital learning resources, ensuring they are accessible and relevant to our global community.
- Help future-proof the College's educational offering.
- Provide guidance on developments in medicine and medical education, including:
- Simulation
- Artificial intelligence
- Emerging technologies
- Learning Management Systems (LMS)
- Podcasting
- Provide oversight and strategic guidance for:
- Education Portal (learning.rcpe.ac.uk)
- RCPE Advance (advance.rcpe.ac.uk)
- Identify gaps within both platforms and recommend solutions, with a particular focus on supporting content and platform development for RCPE Advance.
- Support the development and implementation of the College's digital education strategy.
- Support the identification and assessment of innovative technology platforms.
Partnerships and Development
- Identify new projects, partners and contributors, and propose new educational offerings.
- Liaise with external organisations to secure funding and collaborative opportunities for web-based education and training.
- Commission, source and deliver web-based education for physicians across specialties, locations and career stages.
- Support programmes that expand global access to education.
Digital College
- Promote and increase awareness of RCPE's digital education offering through enhanced visibility and engagement.
- Develop and support digital approaches that strengthen engagement between RCPE and healthcare communities.
- Support the Dean of Education in postgraduate medical education, training and CPD activities.
- Act as a critical friend to the Digital Education team, providing constructive feedback and support.
Committee Commitments
- RCPE Education Executive Group – 5 meetings per year
- RCPE Digital Education Committee (Chair) – 3 meetings per year
- RCPE Digital Committee (currently in development) – meeting frequency to be confirmed
Selection Criteria
Essential
- UK Fellow of the College in good standing from a physicianly specialty.
- Recent or current involvement in postgraduate medical education and training.
- Strong interest in medical education and the transformative potential of digital technologies.
- Awareness of, and enthusiasm for, online and hybrid education technologies.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Strong teamwork and negotiation abilities.
- Commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion, including accessibility.
Desirable
- Experience in attracting and developing strategic partnerships.
