My name is Dr. Evans C. Msiska, a medical doctor from Malawi and I currently work at Mwaiwathu Private Hospital as a medical officer.

From a very young age I got interested in medicine primarily because I saw this as a way to help people who were struggling with health issues like my grandfather. Consequently, I decided to pursue a career in medicine. I completed my medical degree in 2019 at the First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, Czech Republic, where I developed a strong interest in Internal Medicine. Upon graduation, I returned to Malawi and undertook an 18-month internship at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, the largest public referral hospital in the country. This experience deepened my passion for Internal Medicine as I witnessed first-hand the critical shortage of both general medical doctors and specialists across all fields.

Following my internship, I worked in the COVID-19 treatment camps, providing frontline care during the height of the pandemic, before joining Mwaiwathu Private Hospital as a Medical Officer. Working across both the public and private sectors has given me valuable insight into the systemic challenges facing Malawi’s healthcare system, particularly the scarcity of specialists and the impact this has on patient outcomes.

I aspire to specialise in Cardiology, and I believe the MSc in Internal Medicine will be instrumental in equipping me with the advanced knowledge and clinical skills required to contribute meaningfully to the development of specialist care in Malawi. My goal is to help strengthen healthcare delivery and provide high-quality, patient-centred care to those who need it most.

I am honoured and deeply grateful to have been awarded this scholarship from Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh. This opportunity will enable me to complete my studies in a timely manner and move closer to my goal of becoming a Cardiologist.
