Blog: Edinburgh Oncology Course
Written by Dr Karim El-Shankery
The biennial Edinburgh Oncology Course returned to the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) this year, running between 19th and 21st March. Over 40 healthcare professionals, working in Clinical and Medical Oncology, travelled to Scotland for our interactive three-day course. This included those travelling from both the UK and further afield.
The programme consisted of live panel discussions of clinical cases, with topics spanning several subspecialties including Breast Cancer, Central Nervous System Cancers, Colorectal Cancer, Genitourinary Cancers, Lung Cancer, Oligometastatic Disease, and numerous others. Although the course primarily aims to cover clinical scenarios relevant to clinicians preparing for the Clinical Oncology FRCR Part 2 and Medical Oncology Specialty Certificate examinations, feedback tells us that specialty doctors and oncology nurses also find the course useful.
This year, most presentations included Slido polls, providing excellent opportunities for audience participation and questions, helping to tailor further discussions. We are grateful to our attending delegates, who showed great engagement across all sessions. In particular, the Head & Neck session was highlighted as particularly valuable, with healthy discussion across a panel comprising Clinical Oncology, ENT Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery and Neuroradiology colleagues. Similarly, the Cancer of Unknown Primary panel was also praised by delegates for facilitating multidisciplinary engagement. Talks on SABR radiotherapy and breast cancer also received excellent feedback, leading to valuable discussions when the floor was opened for questions.
The course organisers are grateful to our speakers who were integral in making our event a success.
We remind delegates of the ‘library’ of over 30 pre-recorded pre-course talks on a range of cancers. This resource is available for 12 months after the event, to aid further learning.
We thank our 2025 cohort for their attendance and wish all delegates success in their upcoming exams and careers.
