Consultant Gastroenterologist, Royal Victoria Hospital & University Clinical Lecturer, Queen’s University Belfast

As a clinical academic, I am a Consultant Gastroenterologist in the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust and Clinical Lecturer in the Centre for Medical Education, Queen’s University Belfast. Following graduating in Medicine through Queen’s in 2009, I completed my junior doctor training in 2023. During my training I completed a Master’s in Clinical Education (2014), a PhD (2018) and Master’s in Healthcare Ethics and Law (2023). Within gastroenterology I subspecialise in neuroendocrine cancer in the Centre of Excellence (Royal Victoria Hospital) in Northern Ireland. In my university role my main interests are course development, innovation, lecturing and interprofessional simulation based education. Given my lengthy training as a resident doctor (over 14 years) I have developed extensive clinical and academic experience. As such I am able to relate to the resident doctors and have a valuable insight into the variety of benefits, and challenges, that comes with balancing clinical with academic work. These experiences and my position as a clinical academic provides an opportunity to contribute to the RCPE activities. My main interest within the college is to develop the training and educational opportunities for RCPE resident doctors and newly qualified consultants to enhance their clinical practice.

"Having been a member of the RCPE since 2014 I have attended college-based courses and engaged with online learning activities. Given my background and drive I can help develop support for trainees and other consultants from both a clinical and academic perspective." - Dr Spence

Consultant Neurologist, Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

I graduated from medical school in 2015 and achieved Membership of the Royal Colleges of Physicians of the United Kingdom (MRCP UK) in 2014. I subsequently completed my neurology training within the Oxford Deanery, where I developed a strong clinical and academic interest in neuroinflammatory diseases. My training provided comprehensive exposure to a wide range of neurological conditions, with particular emphasis on the diagnosis and management of autoimmune and demyelinating disorders of the central nervous system.

In my current consultant role, I am actively involved in the neuroinflammatory and multiple sclerosis (MS) service within my Trust. This has enabled me to consolidate my clinical expertise in the assessment and long-term management of patients with MS and related disorders, as well as to contribute to multidisciplinary care and service development.

My ongoing professional interests focus on improving patient outcomes through early recognition of neuroinflammatory conditions, optimisation of disease-modifying therapies, and engagement in clinical research and service innovation. I am particularly motivated to enhance collaboration between clinical teams, research groups, and patient organisations to advance both scientific understanding and the quality of care for individuals affected by these complex diseases.
