Biographical information

Dr Buddha Basnyat is a graduate of St Xavier’s high school in Kathmandu Nepal and obtained his medical degree from Patiala, Punjab, India. He did his initial training at Shanta Bhawan Hospital (now Patan Hospital) in Kathmandu and then was trained at Foothills Hospital in Calgary, Canada. He also did a thesis-based Masters in Respiratory physiology from the University of Calgary. He completed his residency in internal medicine from Phoenix, Arizona in the US and is board- certified in internal medicine from the US.

Dr Basnyat’s research interests centre around high altitude sickness and infectious diseases, both of which are in plentiful supply in Nepal. He has published widely in these 2 areas. He is at present a consultant in internal medicine at Patan Hospital and is the Principal Investigator for the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit\Patan Hospital. He is also Professor of Physiology at PAHS (Patan Academy of Health Science), and the President-elect for the ISMM (International Society of Mountain Medicine). Finally, he also runs a travel medicine clinic in Kathmandu called the Nepal International Clinic.
