The College is pleased to be able to recognise excellence through a number of grants, awards and scholarships which currently include:
Fellowship with Distinction
- A category of Fellowship created to recognise those already elected to Fellowship who have served the College with distinction over a sustained period of years.
Honorary Fellowship
- Honorary Fellowship (Hon FRCP Edin) may be conferred on individuals (both medically qualified and non-medically qualified) at the discretion of Council. Generally, such individuals will have made an exceptional contribution to the practice of medicine. Only members of Council may nominate individuals for consideration of this award. As a Royal College, we are privileged that His Majesty King Charles III and Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal are Royal Honorary Fellows.
Research Grants
- JMAS Sim Fellowship: funding research into depressive illness - open to any graduate in Medicine/Science.
- Lindsay Bequest and Reid Trust: funding research into mental and physical health - open to all.
- Myre Sim Fund Bursaries: open to medical students of the University of Edinburgh.
- Myre Sim Fund Research and Travel Grants: open to Fellows, Collegiate Members, Associate Members, and medical graduates of the University of Edinburgh.
Medals and Prizes
- Chiron Medal for excellence in teaching and training: open to consultants and SAS doctors.
- Clinical Lessons Prize: open to Medical Students, Foundation Year Members of the College, Collegiate Members and Associate Members.
- Clouston Memorial Trust Award: open to medical students and foundation doctors (FY1 and FY2)
- College Journal Prize: sponsored by the College Senior Fellows Club - open to trainees.
- Croom Lecture Prize: open to Collegiate Members of any UK Royal College of Physicians, resident in the UK.
- Cullen Medal for the greatest benefit to the practice of medicine: open to Fellows.
- Myre Sim Collegiate Members Prize: open to Collegiate Members.
- Munro Medal for excellence in teaching: open to trainees, SAS doctors.
- Invitations to present endowed lectures at College symposia
Travelling Fellowships and Scholarships
- Scholarships to undertake College/University of Edinburgh online MSc Internal Medicine and MSc Critical Care open to trainees in the UK and internationally.
- Brian Chapman Scholarship: open to international medical practitioners.
National Honours
The College also makes nominations to the UK National Honours system.
Named Lectures
Our symposium and events often feature a keynote lecture, named for a key figure in the College's history.
NCIA Awards 2024
RCPE encourages members and fellows who are Consultants to from England and Wales to apply for an NCIA award which has opened to submission. Unlike the old national awards, Consultants can apply for an award at any time after they have completed a full year in an eligible role (including less than full time consultants), in a permanent NHS contract (fixed term and locum contracts are not eligible).
Applications need to show what has been delivered that has made an impact at a national level, over and above the expectations defined in an applicant’s job plan. The application deadline is 11:59pm on 15 April 2024.
RCPE can signpost applicants to supporting resources (see below) but are not permitted to edit, review, proofread or critique applications’.
