Medical training initiative

Medical Training Initiative (MTI)

The Medical Training Initiative (MTI) is a national scheme enabling a small number of International (non-EU) Medical Graduates (IMGs) to experience high-quality training and development in the UK for up to 24 months. The IMGs train in the UK’s National Health Service (NHS) before returning to their home country to implement their new skills and experience.

We can place trainees in most specialties requested but immediately have training posts available in Renal medicine, Gastroenterology, Medicine of the Elderly/Geriatrics, Respiratory Medicine, Cardiology or Acute with Stroke Medicine.

We welcome applications from IMGs who meet our Eligibility criteria.

We also welcome enquiries from NHS staff for training posts they have been unable to fill through UK recruitment from 2015/2016.

RCPE IMGs receive specialty training, supervised by a qualified NHS consultant. In most instances the training plan is tailored to suit the IMG’s educational objectives and the work the doctor wishes to undertake on returning home.

The MTI is suitable for training at all levels, from Specialty Training Year 3 and above.

The RCPE will sponsor GMC registration for IMGs, facilitate a Tier 5 Visa application and offer ongoing support to trainees during their post. A variety of support is given including the appointment of a mentor for each trainee and various educational events e.g. a ‘Welcome to UK Practice’ induction event organised in conjunction with the GMC.
