Dr Grist’s appointment as virologist was the first in that specialty in Glasgow where he had graduated with commendation in 1942, regarded as a brilliant student. Prior to this key appointment he had worked in Liverpool, Sheffield and Colindale.

His man interests lay in influenza, poliomyelitis and the pox viruses, interested he urther pursued in the USA between 1956-7 working with Thomas Francis. A keen researcher he also found time to give many guest lectures as well as publishing many seminal papers.

A very popular man with a delightful personality, he will be greatly missed.
