Holocaust Memorial Day 2025

27 January 2025

The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (“the College”) will tonight be lighting up the College building in Queen Street in Edinburgh in purple to mark Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) 2025. 2025 of course also marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two.

Holocaust Memorial Day takes place across the world each year on 27th January, the anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau. The Day commemorates the victims of the Holocaust as well as other genocides that have taken place since World War Two. The College reflects with sadness on, and remembers the victims of, all of these genocides including those in more recent history. Millions of people across the globe have been affected by these genocides, including Fellows and Members of our College and we remember the doctors and all other healthcare workers who have been the victims of persecution.

The College notes that the theme of Holocaust Memorial Day 2025 is “For a better future” and we support the calls to learn from and about the Holocaust and more recent genocides, for a better future.

As we mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, we call on all nations to both remember the victims of Holocaust and all genocides that have taken place since, and to work towards a world where there are no more genocides.
