In this webinar we will explore the interface between human and animal health. Our speakers will discuss the burden and economic impact of zoonotic infection and explain how understanding pathogen transmission between species can teach us how to control disease spread at the source. Our final speaker will use the plight of the vultures to demonstrate some of the unintended consequences of veterinary prescribing, highlighting the delicate balance required for a healthy ecosystem.
The ‘One Health’ approach is based on the understanding that the health of humans, animals, plants and the environment are closely linked and interconnected. It is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary process, with the aim of achieving optimal health outcomes at a local, national and global level. This ‘One Health’ strategy is of paramount importance in the prevention and response to pandemics and other threats to health, as demonstrated by the recent COVID-19 pandemic.
In this series we will introduce viewers to the concept of ‘One Health’ through tailored 120 minute webinars led by speakers from the relevant sectors. Each webinar will consist of 3 talks, illustrated by cases, exploring the relationship between people, animals and ecosystems. The talks will be followed by an online expert panel discussion, with questions welcomed from online attendees.
