CMT Quality Criteria

The national survey of CMTs in 2013 highlighted a number of shortfalls in training, with only 51% of respondents feeling prepared for work as a medical registrar by the end of their CMT training. In response to this the RCPE Trainees and Members' Committee proposed a series of practical solutions which we fed back directly to the JRCPTB.

This has contributed to the development of the Core Medical Training Quality Criteria which were launched last month. These aim to improve the educational experience for trainees and drive up quality, ensuring Core Medical Trainees gain the required experience and confidence to perform the medical registrar role.  Some CMT-specific questions will be included on the QC in the next GMC Trainees’ Survey to follow this work up.

The Trainees and Members' Committee has also been working closely with Dr Nicki Colledge, Director of Education and Training at the RCPE, to lead work on Improving the Medical Registrar Role.  This has largely been to recognise the importance of improving job satisfaction and restoring the status and value of the “med reg”. We will join the working group, chaired by Sir Ian Gilmore, to move this work forward and translate it into action
