The RCPE supports the concerns raised by trainees in response to the intransigent views of the UK Secretary of State for Health on the contract for trainees in England. The impasse in negotiations adds to the pressure on trainee doctors and their consultant colleagues, who are already feeling the strain of working with gaps in their rotas, often filled by locums unfamiliar with the ward or hospital. Trainees share the concern of all doctors to protect patient safety and quality of care; a demoralised workforce is not the solution and the results of a recent poll make it clear that mass exit from the NHS is a real threat.
