Commenting on the First Minister’s announcement in relation to safe staffing levels in the NHS in Scotland, Prof Derek Bell, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said:

“The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh welcomes the news that legislation on safe staffing levels in the NHS in Scotland will be brought forward.

“One of the central priorities of our recent ‘Health Priorities 2016’ publication was a call for safe staffing levels across all health professions in hospitals in Scotland.  Safe - and sustainable - staffing levels are required to deliver the best possible standards of patient care and would help prevent a recurrence of the serious failings in NHS care highlighted by numerous Inquiries and Reviews since 2000.

“Any such plans must be appropriately funded and based on best practice in this area in order to successfully meet the changing needs of our patients as they access care throughout the system.”
