Following a needs assessment visit by a Zambia UK Health Workforce Alliance (ZUKWHA) delegation chaired by Dr Anthony Falconer OBE DM FRCOG FRCPE to Lusaka Apex Medical University (LAMU) in 2017, a working group was set up with membership drawn from the College, LAMU and Edinburgh University to develop areas of support for LAMU. Suggested areas for support included critical appraisal, medical leadership training, addressing gaps in curriculum, and provision of a simulation skills laboratory.

Initial plans had to be revised because of the COVID pandemic, but despite this, funding has been provided for equipment for clinical skills teaching which is now used for daily teaching session for medical students, and a series of online lectures has been provided on the College’s educational portal covering topics in gastroenterology, cardiology and rheumatology.
