The Department of Health has, this morning, announced that revalidation will start in December 2012. This is the process by which all doctors in the UK who are licensed with the General Medical Council (GMC) will regularly be required to demonstrate that they are up to date and fit to practise.

Commenting on the revalidation announcement, Dr Neil Dewhurst, President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, said,

“The College welcomes the announcement regarding the enactment of revalidation; if implemented appropriately, revalidation will protect patients and support the continuous development of doctors. The Secretary of State now brings the period of uncertainty and delay to an end and Fellows and Members are reminded of the support available through the College.
