I moved with my family from Sri Lanka to Australia at the age of three. I went on to complete my formal education in Australia, primarily in Sydney. This included attaining a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of New South Wales, graduating with Honours.
I am currently in my second postgraduate year as a resident medical officer at Liverpool Hospital, New South Wales, Australia. This is one of the busiest tertiary referral hospitals in the country, servicing a large catchment of mainly immigrants. As many of our patients have poor health literacy or low socioeconomic status they often present late, this provides an excellent environment to learn, with a high volume of patients with uncommon presentations, particularly with regard to rheumatological disease which is my area of interest.
From my time as a medical student I have been fascinated by the field of rheumatology and have remained actively involved in research in this area, publishing papers along the way with the help of colleagues.
The Masters of Internal Medicine is an innovative and flexible program that I am confident will complement the next phase in my training as a medical registrar. I am excited for this opportunity and look forward to the challenge of furthering my education whilst continuing my clinical and research work.
