William Wightman

William Wightman was the son of Charles Wightman of Anstruther, a wealthy merchant and factor to the Earls of Kellie, and a slave-owner in Tobago. William was a medical student at the University of Edinburgh from 1769 to 1770 and received his MD in 1790 from the University of St Andrews. He practised medicine in Eyemouth, where he lived with his wife Ann Delisle of Dunbar. The couple eloped in 1782, and their marriage took place on 1 August 1782, witnessed by Alexander Nairne and Margaret Gillet. They had three children and later moved to Dunbar. One son, Charles, studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh in 1810. William died at Dunbar on 15 September 1816 aged 64.
