William Thomson

William Thomson was born in Edinburgh in 1802. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, the Edinburgh extramural medical school and the University of Glasgow, and undertook further study in France from 1822 to 1824. In 1826 he was appointed surgeon to the New Town Dispensary and began lecturing in medicine. He received his MD from Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1831. Thomson served as Physician to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh before becoming Professor of the Practice of Medicine at the University of Glasgow. He died in Edinburgh in 1852.
