William Tennant Gairdner

Sir William Tennant Gairdner was born in Edinburgh in 1824 and graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1845. He was appointed house physician and surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh the following year and became infirmary pathologist in 1848. In 1862 he was appointed professor of medicine at the University of Glasgow and worked extensively in public health, serving as medical officer to the city of Glasgow from 1863 to 1872. Gairdner died in Edinburgh in 1907.
