William Taylor

William Taylor was born in Forfarshire in 1836 and earned his MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1867, following several years working in business in Australia. He served as Assistant to the Professor of Practice of Physic and later as Senior Assistant to the Professor of Surgery at the University of Edinburgh, before becoming Resident Surgeon at the Royal Maternity Hospital, Edinburgh. He had a particular interest in midwifery and served as both Fellow and Vice-President of the Obstetrical Society of Edinburgh. While still a student, he published an account in the Edinburgh Medical Journal on the use of artificial heat to maintain foetal heartbeats. He died in Edinburgh in 1916.
