William Stewart trained at the University of Glasgow and Anderson's University, Glasgow, qualifying in 1864. For many years he served as Honorary Surgeon at Beckett Hospital in Barnsley, Yorkshire, before returning to Scotland in 1890 to live in Prestwick, Ayrshire. He published several articles, including 'A New Theory of the Origins of Typhoid Fever' in the British Medical Journal and 'On Laryngismus Stridulus' in The Lancet.
