William Smith Greenfield

William Smith Greenfield trained in London at University College and Hospital, becoming a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1872, earning his MD in 1874, and becoming a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in 1879. He served as Assistant Physician and Lecturer in Pathological Anatomy at St Thomas' Hospital before being appointed Professor of Pathology at the Brown Institute, London. In 1881 he became Professor of Pathology and Clinical Medicine at the University of Edinburgh, a post he held until his retirement in 1912. During his tenure, responsibility for pathology teaching expanded significantly within the University. He published widely on subjects including anthrax and renal disease, and produced English translations of several important medical texts. He died in Edinburgh in 1919.
