William Seller was born in Peterhead, the son of a merchant who died when Seller was young. His mother moved with her children to Edinburgh, where Seller was educated at the High School. He studied classics and philosophy at Edinburgh University before turning to medicine and graduating MD in 1821. Shortly after graduation he opened a boarding house for medical students and ran preparatory classes for examinations.
