William Rutherford was born in Roxburghshire in 1839 and graduated MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1863. He was appointed House Physician at the Royal Infirmary and assistant demonstrator of anatomy at Surgeons' Hall, before undertaking further study in Berlin, Dresden, Prague, Vienna, Leipzig and Paris. On returning to Edinburgh in 1865, he became assistant to the professor of medicine, and in 1869 was appointed Professor of Physiology at King's College London. He returned to Edinburgh in 1874 as Professor of Physiology and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London in 1876. He died in Edinburgh in 1899.
