William Pulteney Alison

William Pulteney Alison received his MD from the University of Edinburgh in 1811. In 1815 he was appointed physician to the newly established New Town Dispensary. He also worked at the Royal Infirmary, and both posts brought him into close contact with Edinburgh's poor, shaping his lifelong commitment to public health. Within the University of Edinburgh he worked with his uncle, James Gregory, whose daughter Margaret he later married. Alison became Regius Professor of Medical Jurisprudence in 1820, Professor of the Institutes of Medicine in 1822, and later Professor of Clinical Medicine at the Royal Infirmary. In 1842 he was appointed Professor of the Practice of Medicine. He served as President of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh from 1836 to 1838.
