William Macdonald

William MacDonald was born on 21 April 1797. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh from 1816 to 1817 and received his MD there in 1818. After practising briefly as a physician in Edinburgh, his interests shifted to zoology. From 1849 he was Professor of Civil and Natural History at the University of St Andrews. MacDonald was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh on 1 May 1820 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 2 February 1836. He was also a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland. He died on 1 January 1875.
