William Henry Lowe was born in 1814 and received his medical degree from the University of Edinburgh on 1 August 1840. He served as resident physician at the Saughton Hall Institute for the Insane and later practised privately in Murrayfield, Edinburgh. Lowe published on jaundice and bile pathology, became a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1839 and a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 4 November 1846. He was President of the College in 1873 and died on 10 August 1900.
