William Elder

William Elder was born in Carnwath in 1864 and practised primarily in Leith. He graduated MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1885 and worked in Manchester, Kirkcaldy, and Edinburgh early in his career. He became a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1893 and was elected a Fellow in 1894. In 1896 he was awarded an MD with a gold medal for his thesis on aphasia. He worked for most of his career at Leith Hospital, serving as Physician in Charge of Wards from 1894 and later as Consulting Physician from 1909. He published articles in the Edinburgh Medical Journal and the British Medical Journal and authored 'Studies in Psychology' (1927). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1904 and died in 1931.
