William Campbell earned his MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1872 and was commissioned into the Army Medical Department in 1864. He served for thirty years, initially with the Scots Guards and later with the Grenadier Guards. His service included postings in Malta, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Egypt, where he was present at the Battle of Tel el Kebir. He retired in 1897 with the rank of Surgeon-Lieutenant Colonel and died in 1936.
