William Arnold attained his MD from Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1821 and was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1822. He was also a Member of the Wernerian Natural History Society. In 1840 he published 'A Practical Treatise on the Bilious Remittent Fever: Its Causes and Effects, with Illustrative Tables and Cases, on the Temperature of the System in the Febrile Diseases of Jamaica: To Which Is Added, Medical Topography of the Different Military Stations in That Important Colony', written while practising in a military hospital in Port Antonio, Jamaica.
