Thomas Stretch Dowse obtained his MD from Aberdeen in 1868, having trained at St George's and Charing Cross Hospitals, London. He was elected a Fellow of the College in 1873. He held several posts in London, including Physician and Medical Officer at Charing Cross, House Surgeon at the Royal Westminster Ophthalmic Hospital, and Medical Officer at the Central London Sick Asylum, Highgate. His work 'On brain and nerve exhaustion and on the exhaustions of influenza' went through several editions. His other publications include 'On the composition of chlorodyne, as judged by its physiological action', published in the Journal of Pharmacology in 1869 to 1870, and 'On caries of atlas and axis', published in the Medical Times and Gazette in 1871.
