Thomas Smith Maccall received his medical degree from the University of St Andrews on 27 April 1838. He served as assistant surgeon to the Queen's Edinburgh Light Infantry Militia, surgeon to the cholera hospital in Musselburgh from 1832, and senior medical attendant at Greenock Hospital and Dispensary from 1849. Maccall became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh on 27 May 1845 and served as President of the Hunterian Medical Society of Edinburgh.
