Thomas Smith was born in London circa 1834 and began his medical career there, becoming a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries and a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons of England in 1860, and a Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London in 1861. He earned his MD from the University of St Andrews in 1883 and became a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in the same year. A Member of the British Medical Association, he spent most of his career in Stockport, serving as Medical Officer for the Bredbury Union District and Surgeon to the Midland and the Manchester, Sheffield and Liverpool Railway Company Friendly Society. He died in 1890.
