Thomas Radford

Thomas Radford was born in Salford in 1793. He began as a surgeon's apprentice before studying medicine at Guy's and St Thomas's Hospitals. In 1818 he was appointed surgeon to the Manchester and Salford Lying-in Hospital and rose to senior posts there. Radford received his MD from Heidelberg in 1839, taught midwifery privately, published extensively on the subject and invented two types of obstetric forceps. He died in Manchester in 1881.
