Thomas Proudfoot was born in Edinburgh in 1842. After initially training as a watchmaker, he turned to medicine in 1875 and earned his MB CM from the University of Edinburgh in 1880. He moved to Newbiggin-by-the-Sea to work as the sole physician in a colliery practice, where he managed a smallpox outbreak. Shortly afterwards, illness resulted in the loss of one eye and impairment of the other, forcing him to abandon practice. He returned to Edinburgh and graduated BSc in Public Health in 1889. In the same year he was admitted as a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and was elected a Fellow in 1892. He later served as Deputy Medical Officer of Health for the Lothians and as Visiting Physician at Slateford Hospital. He died in 1912.
