Thomas Francis Spittal Caverhill was born in the Scottish Borders and trained at the University of Edinburgh, earning his MB CM in 1878. He also undertook a period of study in Vienna. He worked in several hospitals in Edinburgh before returning to the Borders, where he served as Medical Officer of Health for Haddingtonshire. He was a Surgeon-Colonel in the Lothian and Berwick Imperial Yeomanry and developed a mounted battlefield ambulance to aid wounded cavalry. He also founded the Manor Valley Sanatorium as a low-cost alternative to conventional tuberculosis treatment. He died in Jedburgh in November 1910.
