Thomas Charles Hope

Thomas Charles Hope was the third son of John Hope, professor of botany at the University of Edinburgh, and was born on 21 July 1766. In 1791, Hope was appointed chair of medicine at the University of Glasgow, a post he held until 1795. He then moved to Edinburgh, where he became first assistant professor and then professor of chemistry. In 1813 he investigated the water supply of Edinburgh so thoroughly that in 1817 he was granted the freedom of the city. Hope wrote the chemical section of the tenth edition of the 'Edinburgh Pharmacopoeia' (1817).
