Thomas Arnold

Thomas Arnold was born in Leicester. He was awarded MD at the University of Edinburgh in 1766. Arnold then returned to Leicester where he took over the management of his father's private lunatic asylum. In 1771 he took up the post of physician at the Leicester Infirmary and, in 1784, was appointed as the infirmary's senior physician. Arnold's most notable publication was 'Observations on the Nature, Kinds, Causes, and Prevention of Insanity, Lunacy, or Madness' (1782-1786). He died in 1816 in Leicester.
