Thomas Anderson obtained his MB from Edinburgh, having trained at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow. He worked as Medical Assistant at the Southern Counties Asylum near Dumfries and subsequently at the Crichton Royal Institution. In 1874 he was appointed the First Physician Superintendent of the Midlothian and Peebles Asylum, later Rosslynlee Hospital, a post he held until ill health forced his resignation in 1880. He became a Fellow of the College in 1876.
