Thomas Alexander Goldie Balfour was born in Edinburgh, the son of Andrew Balfour, a surgeon in the Twenty Fifth Regiment and later printer of the first edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica. His brother, John Hutton Balfour, became a noted botanist. After initially studying for the ministry, he obtained his MD from Edinburgh in 1851 and later worked as Acting Physician at the House of Refuge, Queensberry Lodge, Edinburgh. A member of the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society, he published extensively on religious matters in relation to science. His medical publications include 'Observations on foetal malformations', published in the Edinburgh Medical Journal in 1861, and 'On congenital diaphragmatic hernia', published in the Edinburgh Medical Journal in 1869. He died in Edinburgh on 10 March 1895.
