Sydney Wilson Thompstone obtained the Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh in 1892 and was elected a Fellow of the College in 1906. His career was spent in both the United Kingdom and Nigeria. His appointments included House Surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Medical Officer in Charge of the Public Health Laboratory at Calabar. He published a number of papers relating to tropical medicine, including 'Preliminary Note on an Unclassified Type of West African Fever' and 'Notes on Blackwater Fever in Southern Nigeria', both published in 1901.
