Stuart McDonald was born at Castle Douglas and educated at Dumfries Academy. He studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh and was awarded MD in 1907 for a thesis on subacute necrosis of the liver. After postgraduate study in pathology, including time in Freiburg, he pursued an academic career. In 1909 he was appointed to the Chair of Pathology at the University of Durham, a post he held until his retirement in 1937, after which he was Emeritus Professor. McDonald published on a range of pathological topics, including asbestosis, and had a particular interest in forensic medicine. He also served as an external examiner in pathology at several universities. McDonald died on 15 July 1951.
