Samuel Cartwright Reed became a Licentiate of the Society of Apothecaries of London in 1859 and obtained his MD from St Andrews in 1862. He practised in London as Physician to the Western City Dispensary and in 1870 took over the management of Munster House Asylum, Fulham. He was succeeded there in 1873 by George Fielding Blandford. His publications include 'The study of lunacy and the care of lunatics' and 'Hints to volunteer surgeons', both published in 1872. He also wrote extensively on sanitation and public health and obtained patents for a drain trap and a stretcher bedstead for field hospitals and ambulances.
