Robert William Philip was born in Glasgow and educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh. He graduated MB CM with honours from the University of Edinburgh in 1882. Within a few years of graduation his work on the prevention and treatment of tuberculosis gained professional attention, and in 1887 he was awarded a gold medal for his MD thesis, 'An Inquiry into the Actual Cause of Death in Tuberculosis'.
